Understanding Dementia: For the General Public

Course Overview

Dementia education isn’t only for professionals. This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn more. In one hour, you’ll gain an overview of dementia, how to communicate more effectively with people living with dementia and their caregivers, and where to find help and support services and resources in DC. This course introduces community members, caregivers, and CBO staff to the key lessons from the Brain Health Initiative dementia training, explaining what dementia is, early signs to watch for, and how the condition affects individuals and families.

Learners will explore simple, everyday ways to provide respectful support, understand available community resources, and learn why protecting safety and rights is so important. By the end, participants will have a clear, stigma-free understanding of dementia and know where to turn for help.
