ADRD Clinical Management: Part I [In-Person]
Overview
This course provides an introduction to how the brain works and explores how aging and neurological illness can affect brain functioning. Participants will learn about best practice approaches to a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, and the characteristics of different forms of dementia. Ethical and policy issues in the use of genetic tests will also be explored. The course will include communication strategies related to diagnostic disclosure, individual and cultural reactions to a diagnosis, and the importance of interdisciplinary teams in providing effective person-centered treatment plans.
Target Audience
Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and dentists who care for elderly populations in an ambulatory setting.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the learner, when caring for geriatric patients, will be able to:
- Discuss biologic aspects of dementia
- Describe brain regions affected in ADRD
- Explain normal cognition and brain changes with aging
- Describe impact of dementia in our aging society
- Discuss issues related to genetic tests and biomarkers
- Identify best practices with regard to diagnostic tools of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia
- Identify current and emerging therapeutic management of ADRD

R. Scott Turner, PhD, MD, FANA, FAAN
Dr. Turner is the Director of the Georgetown University Memory Disorders Program where he serves as the principal investigator on clinical studies with enrolled, healthy older individuals living with mild cognitive impairment or dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. He has received numerous awards, including a Paul Beeson Scholarship and a fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He lectures widely at scientific conferences, serves as a reviewer for numerous biomedical journals, and is widely published in his field.
