Overview

This two-hour course introduces participants to the multifactorial links between oral and systemic health, highlighting connections to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. Special attention is paid to interprofessional, team-based care, empowering physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to recognize shared risk factors, promote prevention, and collaborate across care settings. 

The session blends lecture-style instruction, discussion, and interactive case-based learning to strengthen provider competence in assessing oral–systemic risk, performing comprehensive histories, and engaging patients in preventive care and behavior change conversations that lead to improved outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the multifactorial relationship between oral and systemic health, including associations with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and dementia.  
  2. Perform a comprehensive medical–dental history that includes oral risk assessment, smoking cessation, and nutritional counseling.  
  3. Identify prevention strategies for caries and periodontal disease, emphasizing dietary modification and reduced sugar-sweetened beverage intake.  
  4. Integrate oral–systemic health principles into team-based discussions to improve coordination and patient outcomes utilizing a case study.
