Module IV: Common Conditions

This module equips school nurses and trained school employees (AOMs) with the essential knowledge needed to recognize and respond to common medical conditions in the school setting.

You'll explore the signs, symptoms, and treatment protocols for allergies (including anaphylaxis), asthma, ADHD, seizure disorders, and sickle cell disease—alongside guidance for emergency response and care coordination.

Through this course, participants will learn:

  • Explain the pathophysiology of the following medical conditions commonly encountered in the District of Columbia schools.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms associated with exacerbation of these medical conditions.
  • Summarize treatment and the expected outcome of these medical conditions.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to an emergency involving these conditions.
