Module V: Diabetes Review

This module introduces school nurses and trained school personnel to the critical concepts of diabetes management in the school setting. You'll learn how to recognize signs and symptoms of both high and low blood glucose, understand the underlying physiology of diabetes, and respond effectively to both routine and emergency situations.

You'll also explore tools like blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosing, and glucagon administration — all within the context of a student’s Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP).

  • Describe the basic pathophysiology and differentiate between the three types of diabetes
  • Identify signs and symptoms of high and low blood glucose and their distinguishing characteristics

  • Identify factors affecting blood glucose and explain steps for checking levels
  • Outline strategies for addressing high and low blood glucose
  • Safely and accurately implement diabetic care interventions
