2026 Dyslipidemia Guideline Updates

This 1 credit live course provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive review of the 2026 AHA/ACC/Multi-Society Dyslipidemia Guidelines. Learners will explore updated approaches to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment, LDL-C treatment goal setting, and pharmacotherapy selection across diverse patient populations. The course emphasizes application of the PREVENT-ASCVD calculator, coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, and evidence-based statin and non-statin therapies to reduce lifetime cardiovascular risk.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review the prevalence and significance of dyslipidemia as a primary causal factor in the development of ASCVD. 
  2. Describe the role of the PREVENT-ASCVD Calculator to estimate atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk in primary prevention patients. 
  3. Explain the role of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring to detect subclinical atherosclerosis and guide treatment decisions. 
  4. Define LDL-C and non-HDL-C treatment goals for dyslipidemia and the role of apoB testing. 
  5. Discuss current and emerging dyslipidemia pharmacotherapy to reduce ASCVD risk. 
  6. Apply current guideline recommendations within a team-based framework to patient case scenarios requiring clinical decision-making across diverse presentations and populations.

Dave Dixon

Dr. Dave Dixon is the Nancy and Ronald McFarlane Professor of Pharmacy and Chair of the Department of Pharmacotherapy & Outcomes Science at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. He also holds a joint appointment as Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the VCU School of Medicine. 

Dr. Dixon’s clinical and research work focuses on identifying and addressing gaps in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, with particular emphasis on hypertension and dyslipidemia. He has served on multiple writing groups for clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements and has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications. 

Dr. Dixon is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and the National Lipid Association.
